New Families / Nuevas Familias

We welcome new families at any point throughout the year! If you've come to a recent event, we hope that your kids (and you) had some fun, met a few new people and got a taste for some of the things we do in Cub Scouts. If you haven't yet come to any event, please check out our calendar and contact us for more information.

Below is what we have coming next and how you can officially become a member of our Cub Scout Pack. If you aren't yet certain about joining, please don't hesitate to reach out to me with any questions, or come to our next couple of events to try it out a bit more before committing. We are very much looking forward to getting to know you and your child more and hope that you will feel part of our scouting family and the rich experiences we work together to create!

Pack 205 Activities

• Den Meetings

  • We meet regularly on the 1st Monday of each month to work on Cub Scout "Adventures", for which the kids earn a belt loop or pin for their uniform. Scouts in each grade meet separately for activities organized by their Den Leader that help them learn and grow while having fun with friends. Specifics about the different adventures for each grade can be found online.

  • During this meeting, we can also help you get to know other parents and learn more about the Cub Scout program and get integrated into our Pack 205 family.

• Registration and Costs

  • If you are ready to join, grrrreat! Please fill out an application online. When submitting the application, the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) will collect $165, which includes BSA dues for the next 12 months ($85), as well as the annual Council Participation fee ($80). You can also opt to receive a subscription to Scout Life magazine for an additional $15, which is optional, but highly encouraged. It is published monthly and has lots of articles, games and more to get kids into the spirit of scouting (as well as making them laugh and dream of future adventures).

    • Financial assistance is available to those for whom cost would be a barrier to participating. If you would like to apply for financial assistance DO NOT fill out the online application. Instead, complete both:

      1.  A paper or electronic PDF application. (Return to Pack 205) 

      2.  An application for NCAC financial support. Be sure to mark "New to Scouting and needs to be Registered" and select the boxes for both "BSA Registration Fees" and "NCAC Participation Fees". 

  • Pack 205 has annual dues of $60. This funds the costs for running our Pack, such as awards, facility reservations and supplies for activities. All told, we run a lean ship and do our best to minimize costs. If you are unable to afford the requested dues, please contact us to seek confidential financial assistance.

• Uniforms

  • Just like on a sports team, the uniform is an important part of Cub Scouts. It builds a sense of equality and belonging, and also provides a way for scouts to proudly display their achievements. We recognize that it is an additional cost, however, and do our best to minimize that burden.

  • All scouts should have their own uniform shirt and belt. The Pack will supply hats & neckerchiefs (to the extent we have them), with the request that they be returned and passed on at the end of the year. You are, of course, welcome to purchase your own as well. Other pieces such as pants & socks are encouraged, but optional. 

  • Uniforms may be purchased online or at the National Capital Scout Shop in Bethesda. I recommend going in-person, if possible, to ensure that you get the proper sizing and insignia. The cost of a shirt with all insignia and belt will be $60-65.

    • The uniform will last several years and your child will grow, so please buy the size you would anticipate them to be at the end of 3rd grade (for grades 1-3) or 5th-6th grade (for grades 4-5). It may look big at first, but you'll be surprised at how quickly that changes!

    • The proper insignia includes: National Capital Area Council (NCAC) patch, three red numbers "205", and the World Scouting Crest. I highly recommend using the Uniform Builder if ordering online to make sure you get what you need (and only what you need). If you go in person, NCAC offers shirts with the insignia already sewn on (except the Pack number) for a couple of dollars more. 

    • If you are unable to afford the uniform, please contact me about borrowing one from either our Pack or Council's "uniform library". Used uniforms can also occasionally be found in thrift stores or online at sites like ebay.
