I hope that everyone has gotten off to a good start at school this week! I know it is a busy season for everyone, and it's also the crucial time for making sure our Pack is set up with the people and funds we need to run a vibrant program for our kids this year. Could you please take a couple minutes to do two things today?

1. Sign up for a volunteer shift at the Takoma Park Folk Festival (Sept 6 & 7). 

2. Sign up to help at one (or more) of our upcoming recruiting events.

Important details are below for each of them.

Sept 6 (Saturday) or Sept 7 (Sunday) - Volunteer at Takoma Park Folk Festival (Service & Fundraiser) 

Registration is open for the Takoma Park Folk Festival - Our easiest, most fun and lucrative fundraising event of the year, which also doubles as service. And you get to listen to live music while doing it! (Win-Win-Win!) We need at minimum two hours of volunteering from each family. This year we hope to be able to credit contributions beyond the minimum towards your scout's dues, camp or other costs.

How it works: We volunteer to help staff various jobs at the festival, and they donate $10 per hour worked to the Pack. Scouts aged 8 and up can volunteer for certain jobs, such as the Bucket Brigade (together with another scout or adult). Most shifts are the day of the festival (Sept 7), however there are some on earlier days as well, such as festival setup on Saturday, Sept 6.

To sign up:

2. Select a date to open the list of available shifts.

3. Select the shifts you'd like

4. Fill out your contact information at the bottom.

Sign up today to have the best pick of available shifts! I am the Groundskeeping Manager and will be there literally all day (from about 7am-9pm) and welcome you to join my crew helping folks separate their trash, recycling and compost. There are lots of other jobs too though, both inside and out. On the day of the festival, you will check in at the volunteer table to get your assignment and instructions, and then sign out before you leave so they can count your hours properly.

RECRUITING EVENTS

Recycled Regatta - After School Event from 3:15-4:45pm

Help kids make simple boats using recycled materials (bottles, boxes, foil, etc.) and then race them down our regatta tracks. We will do this event once at each school out on the field. Instructions are at: https://cubscoutideas.com/8850/recycled-raingutter-regatta-boats/

Tabling at Back-to-School Nights (6:30-8pm)

Talk to families about Cub Scouts and hand out flyers inviting them to come to our next event. We need at least two adults to staff our table at each of these. I can provide the display board, flyers and other materials. We just need you to help talk about what we do in Cub Scouts and encourage folks to write their contact info down so that we can follow up. Scouts can help with our prize wheel or mini Pinewood Derby racetrack to help attract and engage the kids. These are our most critical opportunities to talk with families in person, so please arrange to come to one if you can, even if only for part of the time.

We've had a great time on the water this August with kayaking and swimming. Now it's almost back to school time, which means it's also recruiting time for new scouts! Can you volunteer to help with any of these events in the next week?

We need at least two adults to staff our table at each of these. I can provide the display board, flyers and other materials. In the Spring, many people expressed interest in doing a garage sale to benefit the Pack, and my neighborhood is coordinating and advertising one this coming Saturday, Aug 23! It's short notice, but we need donations as well as folks to take a shift staffing it for an hour or two. **Please let me know ASAP what items you can donate and what shifts you can work. If you can solicit donations from others for us to sell, please do!**

Hello Pack 205 Families,

It's been a busy but wonderful last couple of weeks, including with several of you and seven of our Arrow of Light scouts at Camp Ross from June 29-July 5! Scout camp is always a highlight of the year and I was very impressed with how each of the scouts learned or honed some new skills (such as archery, BB's, handicrafts, paddling, fire building), bravely faced some challenges or fears (be it the swim test, spiders, the climbing wall or the 3-mile hike up to Viewing Rock and back) and had a great time working and playing together (including restoring the gaga pit drainage system, solving the escape room, jumping on the water trampoline and playing lots of games around camp). They got a head start on earning several of their AOL adventures and together we also earned all the special awards available from camp, including the "Diamond W" and the Camp Ross Adventure Award. And of course, enjoyed cold slushies.  Be sure to ask them about their favorite things when you see them next, and check out photos in our shared album.

Of course, camp wouldn't have been possible without our dedicated adult leaders, so a big thank you to Jacky, Madeline, Miranda and Alba for spending part or all of their week with us!

Fri-Sun, July 25-27 - Family Campout @ Patapsco Valley State Park - McKeldin Area. 11676 Marriottsville Rd, Marriottsville, MD 21104. Join us for our second summer family campout. Please note: This is a different area of the park than our Spring Pack campout. Use the address/link above. This will be an informal family campout, meaning that we have reserved the campsite, but there is no official program. Families can decide together what they'd like to do - and you are responsible for your own food. We will hang out and play together, go on a hike, enjoy a campfire in the evening, etc. You are welcome to join us in camping, or just come up for the day on Saturday. Saturday, August 2, 9am-noon - Paddle & Pedal @ Bladensburg Waterfront Park. 4601 Annapolis Rd, Bladensburg, MD 20710. Let's explore the beautiful Anacostia River by boat and or/bike! I have two double kayaks and one single kayak as well as a canoe. Extra boats can be rented at the park for $30 each. You can also bring your bike to explore the Anacostia River Trail (or bike down there for the ultimate pedal-paddle combination). Bears, Webelos and AOLs can earn their paddling belt loop/pin, though all ages and family members are welcome to boat. August (Date/Location TBD) - Annual Pool Party and Parent Meeting. Our annual pool party and potluck offers a chance to play in the water and also preview our upcoming scouting year.

Friday, Aug 22 - Recruiting @ Rolling Terrace, New Hampshire Estates & Oak View ES. Help us invite new friends to join us in scouting at back-to-school open houses. Details TBD.

Fri-Mon, Aug 29-Sept 1 - Labor Day Family Camp @ Goshen Scout Reservation. All ages can come enjoy a taste of summer camp with your family. It's a decent drive down, but an unforgettable weekend of adventure, including Aquatics, Range & Target Activities (BBs, Rifle, Archery, and Shotgun), Handicraft (Tie-Dye, Arts and Crafts), and Rock Climbing/Giant Swing. Goshen supplies all programming at no additional cost.

Hello Pack 205 Families,

It was so good to see you at our end of year awards celebration last week! We've had a great scouting year with lots of adventures and new experiences and as always, it has been both a pleasure and a privilege to work with the scouts and see them grow.

While we won't have regular Monday meetings during the summer months, scouting doesn't stop! We have several activities planned, starting with our campout NEXT WEEKEND! 

Details for Family Campout/Beach Day This Weekend at Sandy Point State Park 

School is almost out, so head to the beach to celebrate! We have Youth Group Site A reserved at Sandy Point State Park for Friday-Sunday, 6/13-15. You can arrive starting at 3pm. The youth group area is separate from the rest of the park and has its own private beach, but you can hike, bike or drive into the main park area as well. We will have to leave the youth group area by 1pm on Sunday, but you could stay in the main part of the park longer if you wanted.

This will be an informal family campout, meaning there are no officially scheduled activities and you are responsible for your own food. We will hang out and play together, enjoy a campfire in the evening. You are welcome to join us in camping, or just come up for the day on Saturday.

If you are planning to attend, PLEASE EMAIL OR TEXT ME so that we know who to expect! Also, if you would be interested in sharing meals with other families or need to borrow any equipment, let me know ASAP so that we can coordinate.

**IMPORTANT**: Follow directions to the Sandy Point State Park Youth Group Camping Area, not the main part of the park! There will be a gate, which may be locked. The Youth Group area gate code is 6442. Additional details and a copy of our reservation are forwarded below.

Sandy Point State Park is located on the edge of the Chesapeake Bay, at the foot of the Bay Bridge. It's about a 45-minute drive, though traffic can back up on Fridays, so leaving early is often advisable. But whether overnight or just for the day, I hope to see many of you there to kick off the summer right! Attendance will also count towards earning the Summertime Adventure belt loop.

We have two big events coming up this weekend!

Flower Ave Together Block Party - Saturday, May 31, 2:00-5:00 PM | 8000 Flower Ave. Takoma Park, MD

Come out for a day of celebration, community, food, & entertainment at the 2nd Flower Ave Together Block Party!

The Pack will have a table to help people learn more about Cub Scouts and will need at least two people to staff it each hour. Please let me know if you can take a turn to help us recruit some new scouts!

End of Year Advancement Ceremony and Potluck - Monday, June 2, 6-8pm | Houston-Sligo Creek Park

A reminder that our end-of-year picnic and awards ceremony is Monday evening! 6-8pm at Houston-Sligo Creek Park (on Sligo Creek Parkway at Houston Ave).

Please bring:

• Food and/or drinks to share

• Chairs or a picnic blanket. There are only two picnic tables at the park, so a couple additional folding tables would be welcome as well.

• Reusable dishware so that we can minimize trash

• Your whole family to honor and celebrate our scouts and all they have accomplished this year!

Scouts and leaders should wear their full uniform, including neckerchiefs and hats. At the end, we will collect neckerchiefs and hats so that they can be passed down next year. A scout is thrifty!

¡Nos lo pasamos genial en el agua este agosto practicando kayak y natación! Ya casi es la vuelta al cole, ¡lo que significa que también es época de reclutar nuevos scouts! ¿Te ofreces como voluntario para ayudar en alguno de estos eventos la próxima semana?

Hola familias de Pack 205:

Han sido unas últimas semanas ajetreadas pero maravillosas, incluyendo la de varios de ustedes y siete de nuestros scouts Flecha de Luz en el Campamento Ross del 29 de junio al 5 de julio. El campamento scout siempre es uno de los momentos más destacados del año y me impresionó mucho cómo cada uno de los scouts aprendió o perfeccionó nuevas habilidades (como tiro con arco, balines, manualidades, remo, hacer fogatas), se enfrentó con valentía a algunos desafíos o miedos (ya sea la prueba de natación, las arañas, el muro de escalada o la caminata de 4,8 km hasta Viewing Rock y de regreso) y se lo pasó genial trabajando y jugando juntos (incluyendo la restauración del sistema de drenaje del pozo de gaga, la solución de la sala de escape, saltar en el trampolín acuático y jugar a muchos juegos en el campamento). Empezaron a ganarse varias de sus aventuras de AOL y juntos también ganamos todos los premios especiales del campamento, incluyendo el "Diamante W" y el Premio de Aventura del Campamento Ross. Y, por supuesto, disfrutamos de granizados fríos. No olviden preguntarles sobre sus cosas favoritas la próxima vez que los vean y vean las fotos en nuestro álbum compartido.

Por supuesto, el campamento no habría sido posible sin nuestros dedicados líderes adultos, así que muchas gracias a Jacky, Madeline, Miranda y Alba por pasar parte o toda su semana con nosotros.

¡Exploremos el hermoso río Anacostia en bote y/o bicicleta! Tengo dos kayaks dobles y uno individual, además de una canoa. Se pueden alquilar botes adicionales en el parque por $30 cada uno. También puede traer su bicicleta para explorar el sendero del río Anacostia (o ir en bicicleta hasta allí para la mejor combinación de pedal y remo). Bears, Webelos y AOL pueden ganar su cinturón/pin de remo, aunque todas las edades y miembros de la familia son bienvenidos a navegar. Viernes-lunes, 29 de agosto - 1 de septiembre - Campamento familiar del Día del Trabajo en la Reserva Scout de Goshen. 

Personas de todas las edades pueden venir a disfrutar de una muestra de campamento de verano con su familia. Es un viaje decente, pero un fin de semana inolvidable de aventura, que incluye actividades acuáticas, de campo de tiro y tiro al blanco (balas de aire comprimido, rifle, arco y escopeta), manualidades (teñido anudado, artes y manualidades) y escalada en roca/columpio gigante. Hola familias de Pack 205,

¡Fue muy bueno verlos en nuestra celebración de premios de fin de año la semana pasada! Hemos tenido un gran año de exploración con muchas aventuras y nuevas experiencias y, como siempre, ha sido un placer y un privilegio trabajar con los scouts y verlos crecer.

Si bien no tendremos reuniones regulares los lunes durante los meses de verano, ¡el escultismo no se detiene! Tenemos varias actividades planeadas, ¡comenzando con nuestro campamento LA PROXIMA FIN DE SEMANA! 

Detalles para el campamento familiar/día de playa este fin de semana en Sandy Point State Park

¡Las clases terminaron, así que diríjase a la playa para celebrar! Tenemos el sitio A del grupo de jóvenes reservado en Sandy Point State Park para el viernes y domingo, del 13 al 15 de junio. Puede llegar a partir de las 3:00 p. m. El área del grupo de jóvenes está separada del resto del parque y tiene su propia playa privada, pero también puede caminar, andar en bicicleta o conducir hasta el área principal del parque. Tendremos que abandonar el área del grupo de jóvenes a la 1:00 p. m. del domingo, pero puedes quedarte en la parte principal del parque más tiempo si lo deseas.

Este será un campamento familiar informal, lo que significa que no hay actividades programadas oficialmente y eres responsable de tu propia comida. Pasaremos el rato y jugaremos juntos, disfrutaremos de una fogata por la noche. Puedes unirte a nosotros para acampar o simplemente venir a pasar el día el sábado.

Si aún no me has avisado que vendrás, ENVÍA UN CORREO ELECTRÓNICO O UN MENSAJE DE TEXTO para que sepamos a quién esperar. Además, si estás interesado en compartir comidas con otras familias o necesitas pedir prestado algún equipo, házmelo saber lo antes posible para que podamos coordinar.

**IMPORTANTE**: ¡Sigue las instrucciones hacia el área de campamento del grupo de jóvenes del parque estatal Sandy Point, no hacia la parte principal del parque! Habrá una puerta, que puede estar cerrada. El código de la puerta del área del grupo de jóvenes es 6442. A continuación, se envían detalles adicionales y una copia de nuestra reserva.

El parque estatal Sandy Point está ubicado en el borde de la bahía de Chesapeake, al pie del puente de la bahía. Se trata de un viaje de aproximadamente 45 minutos en automóvil, aunque el tráfico puede congestionarse los viernes, por lo que suele ser recomendable salir temprano. Pero ya sea que se queden a pasar la noche o solo por el día, espero ver a muchos de ustedes allí para comenzar el verano de la mejor manera. La asistencia también contará para ganar el premio del aventura del verano.

¡Ven a disfrutar de un día de celebración, comunidad, comida y entretenimiento en la 2.ª Fiesta de la Calle Flower Ave!

El Pack tendrá una mesa para que la gente aprenda más sobre los Cub Scouts y necesitará al menos dos personas por hora. ¡Por favor, avísame si puedes ayudarnos a reclutar nuevos scouts!

Ceremonia de Avance de Fin de Año y Comida Compartida - Lunes 2 de junio, 18:00-20:00 | Parque Houston-Sligo Creek

¡Un recordatorio de que nuestro picnic de fin de año y la ceremonia de premios es el lunes por la noche! De 6 a 8 p. m. en el parque Houston-Sligo Creek (esquina de Sligo Creek Parkway y Houston Ave).

Traiga:

• Comida y/o bebidas para compartir

• Sillas o una manta de picnic. Solo hay dos mesas de picnic en el parque, por lo que también serían bienvenidas un par de mesas plegables adicionales.

• Vajilla reutilizable para que podamos minimizar la basura

• ¡Toda su familia para honrar y celebrar a nuestros scouts!

Los scouts y líderes deben usar su uniforme completo, incluidos pañuelos y sombreros. Al final, recolectaremos pañuelos y sombreros para que puedan pasarse de generación en generación el próximo año. ¡Un scout es ahorrativo!
