I missed you this weekend, but hope that everyone who went to the International Coastal Cleanup and/or the Cub Scout Adventure Day had a blast! I loved seeing the pictures of scouts serving our community and having fun. And thank you to all the other leaders (you!) who made it happen.

I wasn't able to join because my family was biking our final 45-mile segment of the beautiful and historic 184.4-mile C&O Canal (a trek we started in 2021... it took longer than we anticipated ). On Saturday, we passed the site of our next scout outing, however: Riley's Lockhouse!

Upcoming Events

Oct 4, Sat, 10am-12pm – Outing to Riley’s Lockhouse on C&O Canal (Celebration, Hiking & History) 

Riley's Lockhouse holds a special place in our heart as my wife & daughter's Girl Scout troop has helped provide historical interpretation there several times, part of a 50-year long partnership of service with the local Girl Scout council. We're inviting Pack 205 families to join a celebration of those 50 years during a day filled with fun, hands-on activities!

When: Saturday, 10/4/25 from 10 am to 12pm (though the event goes until 4 pm if you want to arrive or stay later).

Where: 13015 Rileys Lock Rd, Poolesville, MD 20837

What: Take a peek inside Rileys Lockhouse during a guided tour and discover what life was like for lock keepers and their families along the C&O Canal. Try your hand at crafts, games, and other activities popular during the 1800s. After touring as a group and enjoying the festivities, our Pack will take a short hike to the Seneca Quarry and Mill ruins, the source of distinctive red sandstone stone used for many of the canal lockhouses and other notable local buildings, including the Smithsonian Castle. This event is family-friendly, offering something for everyone. Parking and restroom facilities are available on site. We hope you will join us!

Bring: Your Cub Scout Six Essentials and sturdy closed-toed shoes.

Potential Extended Option: If anyone wants to hang out longer, we could potentially bring some of the kayaks/canoes out for some paddling up Seneca Creek after noon. This would take additional logistics and boats would be limited, so I would need to know in advance who is interested and could bring a boat. Email or text me (240-205-4857) if this would be of interest.

Oct 6, Mon 6:30-8pm - Den Meetings/New Parent Orientation @ Rolling Terrace ES

Our first regular monthly meeting of the year will feature a few new elements:

• We will have an organized gathering activity starting at 6:30pm while den leaders finish getting set up and families arrive. This will be an engaging game or challenge for the scouts.

• A short flag ceremony will start promptly at 6:45, after which grade-level groups (dens) will break out for their respective activities.

• During the meeting, we will have an orientation meeting for all new parents to go over basics including the program, calendar, uniform, registration and family contributions. 

• Scouts should wear their Class A (Field) Uniform AND bring a bag with their Six Essentials that they can use as their "scout bag" for the year. We will be giving every scout a folder to keep in their bag which will have important information and help track their progress throughout the year. If your child does not yet have a uniform or needs to request assistance with obtaining one, wear a t-shirt (navy/blue, if possible) for this meeting.

• We will come together as a Pack at 7:45 for a brief closing and announcements.

• Our meeting will focus on outdoor skills and preparation for our Fall Pack Campout

Oct 10-12, Fri-Sun - Fall Pack Campout @ Smallwood State Park

Campouts are a valuable part of Cub Scouts - and one of the most fun things we do together! More details and sign-up will be shared at our Oct 6 meeting, but please plan to come, whether for 1 or 2 nights, or just during the day Saturday. We do a lot of activities together, and scouts will be able to earn the "Let's Camp!" belt loop. See Camping with Pack 205 for some basic information and suggestions. 

Where: Youth Group Site 2 at Smallwood State Park. See Park Map for location of the Youth Group Camping.

• Oct 24-26, Fri-Sun: Woods Weekend (Webelos & Arrow of Light dens only) - Campout and activities for 4th & 5th Grade scouts to learn more scout skills and get introduced to Scouts BSA troops that they may join at the end of 5th grade.

• Nov 1 & 8, Sat, 9:30-11am: Scouting for Food - Collecting canned food in our local neighborhoods to donate to area food pantries

• Nov 10, Mon, 6:30-8pm: Den Meetings @ Rolling Terrace ES

It was fabulous to see so many of you on Monday for our kickoff event, including many new scouts. If you joined us for the first time, I hope that you had fun and got a taste of what we have in store for this year.  We will be following up with all new scouts and parents to help you feel integrated into our Pack family and make sure you have the information and resources you need as you start this scouting journey.

I have some additional information - including a few changes - to the next events listed in the Passport we handed out on Monday. Notably:

• The International Coastal Cleanup is happening a week later this year (Sat, Sept 27) and there is a new location. We now have full details though!

• There is an optional Bike Rodeo being hosted by the White Oak District next Saturday, Sept 20 that wasn't listed initially, as well as details for the Cub Scout Adventure Day on Sunday, Sept 28.

On the calendar you'll see both our official Pack 205 events and the two optional events being sponsored by the White Oak District (which serves all scout units in Eastern Montgomery County). We recognize that not everyone can attend every event, but encourage you to come out for whichever ones you can! As always, check our Pack 205 website and/or subscribe to our Google Calendar to make sure you have the latest info on events.

Upcoming Events

Sat, Sept 20, 2-4pm - Cub Scout Bike Rodeo - hosted by Troops 440 & 249 (White Oak District Event)

• Who:  All Cub Scouts and friends who are interested in joining Cub Scouts. (Boys AND Girls, K to 5th grade) 

• What: A series of stations will cover skills for cycling adventures for all levels of Cubs. You can earn your first belt loop (award)! 

• Where: St Bernadette School, 80 University Blvd. E., Silver Spring, MD 20901

• Additional Details: Scouts and prospective scouts must bring their own bicycle and helmet to participate. **If any scout is interested and doesn't have a bike or helmet, contact me in advance at spencerwclark@gmail.com or 240-205-4875 and I may be able to loan you one for the event**

  • Event is an open format, so show up any time between 2-3:30pm. It should take 30-45 minutes to complete all the activities.

Sat, Sept 27, 9am-12pm - International Coastal Clean-up @ Anacostia Park, DC

Each year we do service in our community, and this is one of our favorite events! The Ocean Conservancy’s 2025 DC International Coastal Cleanup event is on Saturday, September 27th from 9:00am – 12:00pm. Join us at Anacostia Park (1500 Anacostia Drive SE Washington, DC 20020), between the Anacostia Park Boat Ramp and the Aquatic Resources Education Center to help remove debris before it reaches the ocean. Breakfast snacks, lunch and supplies will be provided, including sun screen and bug spray. **Just make sure to wear closed-toe shoes and bring a reusable water bottle!** NOTE: This is a different location than past years, however it is the same spot where we went kayaking in August!

Please Register for this free event with Eventbrite to help them plan and to see more details. This is a high-quality event with corporate sponsorship (last year they gave out Stanley mugs to everyone!) and good food. Volunteers will receive a free t-shirt and reusable water bottle(while supplies last).

Sun, Sept 28 - Cub Scout Adventure Day, Hosted by the White Oak District - For prospective and returning scouts.

WHAT: Fun activities and games to introduce kids to Cub Scouts. The set up is a rotating set of stations (similar to our kickoff event), which will include a mini Pinewood Derby, Raingutter Regatta, obstacle course, knots & blacksmith demonstration, rope bridge and more.

WHEN: Sunday, September 28

Lion Roar:   1:30 - 2:30 pm (Lions only event, Kindergarten)

Tiger Hunt:  2:30 - 3:30 pm (Tigers only event, First Grade)

Cub Adventure Day: 2:00 - 5:00 pm (All Cub Scout Ranks, K-5). Come and go anytime during event hours

WHERE: Colesville Local Park, 610 Hobbs Dr, Colesville, MD 20904. Park in the Transfiguration Parish parking lot across the street

COST: $5 per person, including additional family members (siblings) and non-scout friends. If two parents are attending, only one parent needs to register and pay.

• Please register for all events in advance.

• Note that registering for Lion Roar and/or Tiger Hunt includes all Cub Adventure Day activities. Lions and Tigers must have adult partners attend.

• Non-Scout friends and their parents are also welcome to attend and can register at the event; payment is accepted by credit card only, although registration can be completed in advance.

• Dens must register all their scouts and den leaders (two are required) on a single registration form. Do not register individually.

• If your den is not attending, parents may register their scout using registration option 1.

NOTE: This is an outdoor event, dress for being active outdoors and for the day’s weather (rain or shine). Be prepared! Bring water to drink and a light snack to eat. Please note that the event is subject to cancellation in the event of extreme weather conditions.

I know there are a lot of possibilities as we start the year (and the weather is beautiful), but again, our Den Meetings and Pack outings are the core elements of the program, so prioritize those as best you can. We look forward to seeing you soon!

I'm very excited for our first den meetings tomorrow as we kick off the new year and welcome interested scouts. We need all current scouts and parents to arrive at Rolling Terrace ES at 6pm (or as early as you are able) to help set up before new scouts arrive at 6:45pm. With all our outreach, we're expecting a good turnout!

Like last year, our first meeting will be an introduction to Cub Scouts and our program year, and dens will rotate through stations that are themed with our core program areas:

• Personal Safety - 6 Essentials & First aid kits

• Outdoors - Set up a tent/campsite, S’mores 

• Personal fitness - Obstacle course

• Citizenship - Teamwork challenge, Vote on activities for the year 

• Family & Reverence - Parent & Child thumb ball game

Each station will have simple printed instructions and be run by a few parents and an older scout. We will also need several greeters to help welcome and direct new families at the event. Every attendee will receive a "Passport to Adventure" that will be stamped at each station to mark their progress.

As discussed at our parent meeting last Spring, we'll be making a few changes this year, including asking each Scout to bring their 6 Essentials bag to every den meeting. This will be a "scout bag" that will also house the similar passport/mini handbook that we'll use to share information with families and help track each scout's advancement throughout the year. So please assemble and bring your 6 Essentials with you on Monday!

Please confirm with me today whether or not you and your scout will be there tomorrow. And thanks again for all your contributions in preparation. Let's get this year started!  

Los extrañé este fin de semana, pero espero que todos los que asistieron a la Limpieza Costera Internacional o al Día de Aventura de los Cub Scouts se hayan divertido. Me encantó ver las fotos de los scouts sirviendo a nuestra comunidad y divirtiéndose. Y gracias a todos los demás líderes (¡ustedes!) que lo hicieron posible.

No pude asistir porque mi familia estaba recorriendo en bicicleta nuestro último tramo de 72 kilómetros del hermoso e histórico Canal C&O de 297 kilómetros (una ruta que comenzamos en 2021... nos llevó más tiempo del previsto). Sin embargo, el sábado pasamos por el lugar de nuestra próxima excursión scout: ¡Riley's Lockhouse!

Nuestra primera reunión mensual regular del año contará con algunos elementos nuevos:

Fue fantástico ver a tantos de ustedes el lunes en nuestro evento inaugural, incluyendo a muchos nuevos scouts. El evento de limpieza costera internacional DC 2025 de Ocean Conservancy es el sábado 27 de septiembre de 9:00 a. m. a 12:00 p. m. Únase a nosotros en Anacostia Park (1500 Anacostia Drive SE Washington, DC 20020), entre la rampa para botes de Anacostia Park y el Centro de educación sobre recursos acuáticos para ayudar a eliminar los escombros antes de que lleguen al océano. Domingo, 28 de septiembre - Día de Aventura de los Cub Scouts, organizado por el Distrito de White Oak - Para futuros scouts y antiguos scouts.

QUÉ: Actividades y juegos divertidos para presentarles a los niños a los Cub Scouts. El montaje es un conjunto rotativo de estaciones (similar a nuestro evento de lanzamiento), que incluirá un mini Pinewood Derby, una regata de canaletas, una carrera de obstáculos, una demostración de nudos y herrería, un puente de cuerda y más.

• Rugido del León: 1:30 - 2:30 p. m. (Evento solo para Leones, kínder)

• Caza del Tigre: 2:30 - 3:30 p. m. (Evento solo para Tigres, primer grado)

• Día de Aventura de Cub Scouts: 2:00 - 5:00 p. m. (Todos los rangos de Lobatos, kínder a 5.º grado). Ven y ve en cualquier momento durante el horario del evento. 

DÓNDE: Parque local de Colesville, 610 Hobbs Dr, Colesville, MD 20904. Estacione en el estacionamiento de la Parroquia de la Transfiguración al otro lado de la calle.

COSTO: $5 por persona, incluyendo familiares adicionales (hermanos) y Amigos no Scouts. Si asisten dos padres, solo uno de ellos debe registrarse y pagar.

• Por favor, regístrese con anticipación para todos los eventos. Tenga en cuenta que la inscripción para Rugido de León y/o Caza de Tigres incluye todas las actividades del Día de Aventura de los Cub Scouts. 

• Los Leones y Tigres deben estar acompañados por adultos. Los amigos no Scouts y sus padres también pueden asistir y registrarse en el evento; solo se acepta pago con tarjeta de crédito, aunque la inscripción puede realizarse con anticipación. 

• Los dens deben registrar a todos sus scouts y líderes de den (se requieren dos) en un solo formulario de inscripción. No se registren individualmente. 

• Si su den no asiste, los padres pueden registrar a su scout utilizando la opción de inscripción 1. 

NOTA: Este es un evento al aire libre; vístase adecuadamente para las actividades al aire libre y para el clima del día (llueva o truene). ¡Prepárese! Traiga agua para beber y un refrigerio ligero para comer. Tenga en cuenta que el evento está sujeto a cancelación en caso de condiciones climáticas extremas.

• Sábado 4 de octubre, 9:00 a. m. a 1:00 p. m.: Excursión a la Esclusa de Riley en el Canal C&O (Senderismo, Remo e Historia). 

• Lunes 6 de octubre, 6:30 a. m. a 8:00 p. m.: Reuniones de Den/Orientación para nuevos padres en Rolling Terrace ES. 

• Viernes 11-13 de octubre, domingo: Campamento de otoño de la manada en el Parque Estatal Smallwood.

Sé que hay muchas posibilidades al comenzar el año (y el clima es hermoso), pero, como ya hemos dicho, nuestras reuniones de den y las salidas de la manada son los elementos principales del programa, así que priorícenlas lo mejor que puedan. ¡Esperamos verlos pronto!

Estoy muy emocionado por nuestras primeras reuniones de den mañana, ya que damos inicio al nuevo año y damos la bienvenida a los scouts interesados. Necesitamos que todos los scouts actuales y sus padres lleguen a la Escuela Primaria Rolling Terrace a las 6 p. m. (o lo más temprano posible) para ayudar con los preparativos antes de que lleguen los nuevos scouts a las 6:45 p.m. Con todo nuestro trabajo de divulgación, ¡esperamos una buena asistencia!

Al igual que el año pasado, nuestra primera reunión será una introducción a los Cub Scouts y nuestro programa anual, y los denarios rotarán por estaciones temáticas relacionadas con nuestras áreas principales:

• Seguridad personal: 6 elementos esenciales y botiquines de primeros auxilios

• Actividades al aire libre: Armar una tienda de campaña/campamento, S'mores

• Ejercicio físico: Carrera de obstáculos

• Ciudadanía: Desafío de trabajo en equipo, Votación sobre las actividades del año

• Familia y reverencia: Juego para padres e hijos

Cada estación tendrá instrucciones impresas sencillas y estará a cargo de algunos padres y un scout mayor. También necesitaremos varios recepcionistas para dar la bienvenida y guiar a las nuevas familias en el evento. Cada asistente recibirá un "Pasaporte a la Aventura" que se sellará en cada estación para marcar su progreso.

Como se discutió en nuestra reunión de padres la primavera pasada, este año haremos algunos cambios, incluyendo pedirle a cada Scout que traiga su bolsa de 6 Elementos Esenciales a cada reunión de den. Esta será una "bolsa scout" que también contendrá el pasaporte/mini manual similar que usaremos para compartir información con las familias y ayudar a seguir el progreso de cada scout a lo largo del año. ¡Así que por favor, reúnanse y traigan sus 6 Elementos Esenciales el lunes!
