I'm very excited for our first den meetings tomorrow as we kick off the new year and welcome interested scouts. We need all current scouts and parents to arrive at Rolling Terrace ES at 6pm (or as early as you are able) to help set up before new scouts arrive at 6:45pm. With all our outreach, we're expecting a good turnout!

Like last year, our first meeting will be an introduction to Cub Scouts and our program year, and dens will rotate through stations that are themed with our core program areas:

• Personal Safety - 6 Essentials & First aid kits

• Outdoors - Set up a tent/campsite, S’mores 

• Personal fitness - Obstacle course

• Citizenship - Teamwork challenge, Vote on activities for the year 

• Family & Reverence - Parent & Child thumb ball game

Each station will have simple printed instructions and be run by a few parents and an older scout. We will also need several greeters to help welcome and direct new families at the event. Every attendee will receive a "Passport to Adventure" that will be stamped at each station to mark their progress.

As discussed at our parent meeting last Spring, we'll be making a few changes this year, including asking each Scout to bring their 6 Essentials bag to every den meeting. This will be a "scout bag" that will also house the similar passport/mini handbook that we'll use to share information with families and help track each scout's advancement throughout the year. So please assemble and bring your 6 Essentials with you on Monday!

I hope that everyone has gotten off to a good start at school this week! I know it is a busy season for everyone, and it's also the crucial time for making sure our Pack is set up with the people and funds we need to run a vibrant program for our kids this year. Could you please take a couple minutes to do two things today?

1. Sign up for a volunteer shift at the Takoma Park Folk Festival (Sept 6 & 7). 

2. Sign up to help at one (or more) of our upcoming recruiting events.

Important details are below for each of them.

Sept 6 (Saturday) or Sept 7 (Sunday) - Volunteer at Takoma Park Folk Festival (Service & Fundraiser) 

Registration is open for the Takoma Park Folk Festival - Our easiest, most fun and lucrative fundraising event of the year, which also doubles as service. And you get to listen to live music while doing it! (Win-Win-Win!) We need at minimum two hours of volunteering from each family. This year we hope to be able to credit contributions beyond the minimum towards your scout's dues, camp or other costs.

How it works: We volunteer to help staff various jobs at the festival, and they donate $10 per hour worked to the Pack. Scouts aged 8 and up can volunteer for certain jobs, such as the Bucket Brigade (together with another scout or adult). Most shifts are the day of the festival (Sept 7), however there are some on earlier days as well, such as festival setup on Saturday, Sept 6.

To sign up:

I am the Groundskeeping Manager and will be there literally all day (from about 7am-9pm) and welcome you to join my crew helping folks separate their trash, recycling and compost. There are lots of other jobs too though, both inside and out. On the day of the festival, you will check in at the volunteer table to get your assignment and instructions, and then sign out before you leave so they can count your hours properly.

RECRUITING EVENTS

Recycled Regatta - After School Event from 3:15-4:45pm

Help kids make simple boats using recycled materials (bottles, boxes, foil, etc.) and then race them down our regatta tracks. We will do this event once at each school out on the field. Instructions are at: https://cubscoutideas.com/8850/recycled-raingutter-regatta-boats/

Tabling at Back-to-School Nights (6:30-8pm)

Talk to families about Cub Scouts and hand out flyers inviting them to come to our next event. We need at least two adults to staff our table at each of these. I can provide the display board, flyers and other materials. We just need you to help talk about what we do in Cub Scouts and encourage folks to write their contact info down so that we can follow up. Scouts can help with our prize wheel or mini Pinewood Derby racetrack to help attract and engage the kids. These are our most critical opportunities to talk with families in person, so please arrange to come to one if you can, even if only for part of the time.

We've had a great time on the water this August with kayaking and swimming. Now it's almost back to school time, which means it's also recruiting time for new scouts! Can you volunteer to help with any of these events in the next week?

RECRUITING EVENTS

Aug 23, Saturday, 9am-1pm - Garage Sale Fundraiser @ Spencer’s House (8509 Glenville Rd, Takoma Park, MD 20912) (Set up starting at 8am)

In the Spring, many people expressed interest in doing a garage sale to benefit the Pack, and my neighborhood is coordinating and advertising one this coming Saturday, Aug 23! It's short notice, but we need donations as well as folks to take a shift staffing it for an hour or two. **Please let me know ASAP what items you can donate and what shifts you can work. If you can solicit donations from others for us to sell, please do!**

Estoy muy emocionado por nuestras primeras reuniones de den mañana, ya que damos inicio al nuevo año y damos la bienvenida a los scouts interesados. Necesitamos que todos los scouts actuales y sus padres lleguen a la Escuela Primaria Rolling Terrace a las 6 p. m. (o lo más temprano posible) para ayudar con los preparativos antes de que lleguen los nuevos scouts a las 6:45 p.m. Con todo nuestro trabajo de divulgación, ¡esperamos una buena asistencia!

Cada estación tendrá instrucciones impresas sencillas y estará a cargo de algunos padres y un scout mayor. También necesitaremos varios recepcionistas para dar la bienvenida y guiar a las nuevas familias en el evento. Cada asistente recibirá un "Pasaporte a la Aventura" que se sellará en cada estación para marcar su progreso.

Como se discutió en nuestra reunión de padres la primavera pasada, este año haremos algunos cambios, incluyendo pedirle a cada Scout que traiga su bolsa de 6 Elementos Esenciales a cada reunión de den. Esta será una "bolsa scout" que también contendrá el pasaporte/mini manual similar que usaremos para compartir información con las familias y ayudar a seguir el progreso de cada scout a lo largo del año. ¡Así que por favor, reúnanse y traigan sus 6 Elementos Esenciales el lunes!

¡Espero que hayan empezado bien la escuela esta semana! Sé que es una temporada muy ocupada para todos, y también es crucial asegurarnos de que nuestra Manada cuente con el personal y los fondos necesarios para llevar a cabo un programa dinámico para nuestros niños este año. ¿Podrían dedicar un par de minutos a hacer dos cosas hoy?

1. Inscribirse para un turno de voluntariado en el Festival Folclórico de Takoma Park (6 y 7 de septiembre).

2. Inscribirse para ayudar en uno (o más) de nuestros próximos eventos de reclutamiento.

¡Nos lo pasamos genial en el agua este agosto practicando kayak y natación! Ya casi es la vuelta al cole, ¡lo que significa que también es época de reclutar nuevos scouts! ¿Te ofreces como voluntario para ayudar en alguno de estos eventos la próxima semana?
